IT for Legal

Technology that Protects Client Confidentiality

Law firms run on confidentiality and deadlines, and both depend on technology that simply works. We keep your systems secure and reliable, and protect the client information you're duty-bound to safeguard, so your fee earners can rely on the practice software they use all day without a second thought.

UNDERSTANDING THE SECTOR

We understand how law firms work

Legal work runs to tight deadlines and depends on information that has to stay confidential. A system outage during a completion or a court deadline isn't a minor inconvenience, and a data breach can bring the SRA to your door and damage the trust your firm is built on. Law firms are also a favourite target for cyber criminals, particularly around conveyancing and client funds. Your technology has to be dependable and secure, and whoever supports it has to understand what's at stake.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What does IT support for a law firm involve?

Part of it looks the same as it would in any business: keeping laptops, email and servers working, fixing problems quickly, patching software, keeping licences in order and getting new starters set up on their first morning rather than their third.

The rest is where a law firm differs. Your case and practice management system sits at the centre of the firm, so whoever supports it needs to know how it behaves rather than reaching for the vendor every time. Client confidentiality is a professional duty, which makes access controls, encryption and email security part of the job rather than an upgrade. Your firm handles client money, so you're a standing target for the conveyancing and payment fraud that follows the sector around. And when the SRA, your insurer or a client asks how you protect their data, you need evidence you can hand over.

So it's worth asking a prospective provider more than what their response time is. Have they supported your case management system before? Can they evidence their own security certifications rather than just talking about security? And do they understand what a delay costs when a completion is running late? We can answer all of that, and we'll show you how.

HOW WE HELP

Reliable IT support built around fee earners

We take on the day-to-day running of your IT so your fee earners aren't losing billable time to technology that won't behave. That means fast help when something breaks, systems kept up to date and secure, and someone who understands that a delay at the wrong moment has real consequences. We also handle the bigger projects, from moving to the cloud to opening a new office. See our managed IT services and IT helpdesk services.

SECURITY & CONFIDENTIALITY

Protecting client confidentiality and meeting your obligations

Client confidentiality is a professional duty, and your technology is where much of it's kept or lost. We help you protect client data with strong access controls, encryption and email security, and we guard against the fraud that targets law firms, like the bogus bank-detail changes behind so-called Friday afternoon fraud. We help you meet your duties under UK GDPR and support the standards behind Lexcel and Cyber Essentials, and we hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and Cyber Essentials Plus ourselves. See cyber protection and compliance.

SPECIALIST SOFTWARE

We support the software your practice runs on

Your case and practice management system is the heart of the firm, so support that shrugs when it goes wrong is no use to you. We take the time to understand the legal software you depend on, whether that's your case management, document management or accounts package, so we can actually help rather than passing you back to the vendor.

WHY FIRMS CHOOSE US

A partner who speaks your language

We work as a strategic partner, not a faceless helpdesk. You get people who learn your firm, answer the phone when you call, and give you straight advice on where technology can save time or reduce risk. Many of our clients treat us as their outsourced IT department, freeing partners to focus on running the practice.

IN THEIR WORDS

What clients say

“Having been involved with these guys since 2008 we could not be more satisfied with the level of service and support they have provided us since day one. They have completed full system upgrades on more than one occasion over the years, networking our branches together, assisting and supporting us every step of the way without issue. The service is superb.”

HOW WE CAN HELP

Solutions law firms rely on most

Most firms build on managed IT services, with cyber protection and compliance central to protecting client data and meeting professional duties. Our IT helpdesk keeps fee earners productive, cloud enablement supports flexible and multi-office working, and our IT consultancy helps you plan bigger changes like a system move or a merger. If you already have someone technical in-house, co-managed IT puts a second team behind them.

WHERE WE WORK

Supporting law firms across the UK

We're based in the South West and support law firms right across the UK, from high street practices to firms of several hundred people with offices in more than one town. Most of what we do is delivered remotely, so where your offices are makes little difference to how quickly we can help. We come out in person when a new office, a system migration or a conversation that's better had face to face calls for it.

Working across sectors helps here too. The confidentiality questions a law firm faces overlap with the audit questions a fintech faces and the safeguarding questions a charity faces, so what we learn in one place travels. See where we work across the UK, or browse all the sectors we support.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What does IT support for a law firm involve?

It covers the everyday running of your technology, keeping laptops, email and servers working and fixing problems quickly, plus the extra obligations that come with practising law. That means protecting client confidentiality, supporting your case management system properly and being able to evidence your security controls when a client or the SRA asks.

Can you support our case and practice management software?

Yes. We learn the legal software your firm depends on so we can support it properly, rather than leaving you to deal with the vendor alone.

What's the difference between IT support and a managed IT service for a law firm?

Support fixes things when they break. A managed service runs your technology for a monthly fee, so it's monitored, patched and secured before anything breaks, and someone is thinking a year ahead on your behalf. Most firms we work with are on a managed service, which is what our managed IT services cover.

How do you protect against Friday afternoon fraud and other legal-sector scams?

We combine email security, strong authentication and staff training to reduce the risk, and we help you put verification steps around payments and bank-detail changes.

Can you help us stay compliant with SRA and data protection requirements?

We're not legal compliance advisers, but we make sure your technology supports your obligations, from protecting client data to evidencing the controls behind schemes like Lexcel and Cyber Essentials.

Can you help us answer a client's due diligence questionnaire or a Lexcel assessment?

Yes. Most of the technical evidence an assessor or a client questionnaire asks for comes out of your IT setup, so we document what's in place and give you answers you can use rather than a technical export you have to interpret first. We hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and Cyber Essentials Plus ourselves, so we've been through the process from your side of it.

Do you support hybrid and multi-office working?

Yes. We set up secure access to your systems from any office or home, so your team can work wherever they need to without putting client data at risk.

What happens if something breaks during a completion or a court deadline?

That's what the monitoring and the response times are for. We watch your systems 24/7 and our average response time in business hours is under 30 minutes, and we know a delay in a legal practice isn't the same as a delay elsewhere. Tell us your critical dates and we'll plan around them.

How much does IT support for a law firm cost?

It usually works out as a monthly figure per user, shaped around what your firm actually needs rather than a fixed package. A short discovery call is the quickest way to get an accurate number, and that conversation costs you nothing.

We already have an IT provider. How difficult is it to switch?

Less difficult than most businesses expect. We take over in stages so nothing goes dark, plan around your calendar, and handle the conversation with your outgoing provider if you'd rather not have it.

We have someone technical in-house. Can you work alongside them?

Yes. Plenty of firms keep an internal IT manager and use us for out-of-hours cover, specialist projects and the strategic thinking. That's what our co-managed IT service is for.

Can you help us move off a server in the office and into the cloud?

Yes, and it's one of the more common jobs we're asked to do. Plenty of firms are still running a server in a cupboard that's overdue for replacement. We plan the move so your case management, documents and email come with you and your team keeps working while it happens. See cloud enablement.

Do you work remotely or come to our offices?

Both. Most support is remote because that's the fastest way to fix something, and we visit for new office setups, hardware work, training and the conversations that go better in person.

What size of firm do you work with?

We mainly support organisations from around 10 to 500 staff, so that covers everything from a small practice to a firm with several offices. We work across legal, fintech, construction, renewables, charities and professional services.

How do we get started?

It starts with a short discovery call. We learn about your business, point you to the best first opportunity and suggest a practical next step, with no obligation.

Let's take IT off your firm's mind

Whether you're worried about security, frustrated with slow support or planning a bigger change, it starts with a conversation about how your firm works. Book a free discovery call and we'll take it from there.
