What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. They let a site remember things like whether you've answered a consent banner, and they let us measure how our site is being used.

Your choices

The first time you visit, you'll see a banner asking which cookies you're happy with. Only the essential cookie below loads before you answer. If you decline, we don't load the analytics or session recording scripts at all. We don't load them and then switch them off afterwards. The code never runs.

You can change your mind at any time by clicking "Cookie preferences" at the bottom-left of any page.

Essential cookies

This one keeps the site working and we can't switch it off. Without it we'd have no way to remember your cookie choice, so we'd have to ask you on every page.

Your dark or light mode preference is kept in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie, so it stays on your device and is never sent to us.

Analytics and session recording cookies

These only load if you accept them. We use them to see which pages people find useful and where the site is confusing, so we can fix it.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics tells us how many people visit, which pages they read and how they found us. It doesn't tell us who you are.

Microsoft Clarity

Microsoft Clarity records how our pages get used. That includes mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and a replay of the page as you saw it, plus heatmaps showing where visitors click. We watch these back to find layouts that don't work and forms that trip people up.

Clarity masks the text you type before it leaves your browser, so what you enter into a form isn't captured. It's still more detailed than ordinary analytics, which is why we ask before loading it and why you can turn it off on its own without turning off Google Analytics.

Advertising cookies

We don't set any advertising or retargeting cookies of our own, and we don't sell your browsing to ad networks. One thing worth knowing: the Microsoft cookies listed above are identifiers Microsoft can also use across its own advertising services. That's part of why Clarity sits behind the consent banner rather than loading automatically.

Where this data goes

Google and Microsoft process this data outside the UK, including in the United States. Both are certified under the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and our agreements with them include the standard contractual clauses the UK GDPR requires for international transfers. Managing cookies

The quickest way is the "Cookie preferences" button at the bottom-left of any page. It reopens the banner and lets you accept or decline each service on its own.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though this affects every site you visit rather than just ours. If you'd rather opt out of Google Analytics everywhere, Google publishes a browser add-on that does it. Clarity has no separate opt-out because declining it here stops it loading in the first place.

Updates to this policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. If we add a service that sets cookies, we'll ask for your consent again rather than relying on a choice you made before it existed. Any changes get posted on this page with a new revision date.
