What You Need to Know To Keep Your Business Secured

Public Wi-Fi is everywhere – in cafés, airports, hotels, and train stations. It’s convenient for remote workers and business travellers, but it also poses significant cyber security threats. If your business relies on employees working outside the office, understanding public Wi-Fi security risks for businesses is essential.

Cyber criminals can exploit unsecured networks to steal sensitive data, access business accounts, and even install malware on company devices. Two of the biggest risks are Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks and Evil Twin attacks, both of which could put your business at risk of financial loss, data breaches, and reputational damage.

The Biggest Public Wi-Fi Security Risks For Businesses

Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) Attacks

Imagine you’re working from a coffee shop, logging into your business email or accessing financial data. You think your device is securely connected to the Wi-Fi network, but in reality, a cyber criminal has inserted themselves between you and the connection.

This “man in the middle” can intercept everything – from passwords and emails to financial transactions. The worst part? You probably wouldn’t even notice.

Cyber criminals can use this stolen data to:

  • Sell it to third parties
  • Impersonate employees for phishing scams
  • Access sensitive business accounts
  • Steal company funds

For businesses, this could mean client data or financial records falling into the wrong hands.

Evil Twin Attacks

Picture this: You’re at an airport, and you see two Wi-Fi options – one called “Airport Free Wi-Fi” and another called “Airport Wi-Fi Secure.” Both sound legitimate, but one could be a fake network created by hackers.

If you connect to the fraudulent network, cyber criminals can:

  • Monitor everything you do online
  • Capture login credentials and company data
  • Install malware on your device without your knowledge

Once inside your system, attackers could access business accounts, impersonate employees, or even launch ransomware attacks.

How to Keep Your Business Safe

The risk is real, but your business can take action to protect sensitive data. Here’s how:

✔ Educate your employees. Ensure your team understands the risks of public Wi-Fi and follows secure browsing habits.

✔ Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN encrypts connections, making it nearly impossible for hackers to intercept data.

✔ Turn off auto-connect on business devices. This prevents devices from automatically joining unsafe networks.

✔ Stick to websites using HTTPS. A padlock icon in the address bar means data is encrypted.

✔ Enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Even if credentials are stolen, attackers won’t be able to access business accounts without a second verification step.

✔ Keep software and security patches updated. Many cyber attacks exploit vulnerabilities in outdated systems.

Are Public Wi-Fi Risks For Your Business Worth It?

A little caution goes a long way in keeping your business secure. Ask yourself: Is the convenience of free Wi-Fi worth the risk of exposing company data?

If your business relies on remote working, Inflection Point can help you implement the right cyber security measuresto protect employees and business data-wherever they work.
